by Charles Maggs

- Before he disappeared, Gustav committed perjury - no one knew why and then he was gone. just like that.

- Gustav said once it was important to maintain your bearings at all times.

- Gustav spoke about drowning a lot, he was fixated on it

- There was a rumor that he was colour blind, he would not confirm or deny this....

- the day he went had been quite hot, his cleaner said some of the windows were open

- Gustav used to refer to anything that wasn't banally western as quite exotic.

- He would say ' hmmm a Cantonese restaurant now that's quite exotic

- Gustav would look over his shoulder a bit worried and then shrug and say, I'm just getting my bearings...

- Gustav's disappearance went unnoticed for a few days.

- He did smile a lot

- He had very white teeth, much whiter that most people

- Gustav preferred it if his post went to his po box, he didn't like it to arrive through the slot in his door...

- on Thursdays Gustav would put on his crisp linen suit and panama hat, he'd say hmm hot days hot days I'm looking for those hot days

- Gustav disappeared on a Thursday, his suit was in the closet, but the hat was gone...

- Gustav was the kind of person who would send you a postcard from where ever he was visiting, even if he went away for the weekend. A light house, the beach on the south coast, a Tudor style hotel with wish you were here in script font on the front.

- Gustav used to ask 'are you an eager beaver ?' should I deal you in and then he'd wink...

- There were no postcards after he disappeared.

- Gustav was doing some research just about the time he went

- He said it had something to do with systems

- Gustav was always busy, but he had become increasingly worried about things

- Gustav would talk about the times when he was a boy and he would do such and such.

- Mostly he would eat out, in fact he didn't have any appliances or a fridge at home, said he didn't like the way they smelt

- Gustav had a parrot called Ernesto it stopped talking once he was gone

- He spent most of his weekends under his car, fiddling with this and that

- Gustav used to look out the window, a bit wistful and half sing 'the man in the blue suit will get here eventually, ho hum ho hum'

- You must develop sea legs you dog, you must develop them - he would yell sometimes at clumsy people

- Not many people knew, but Gustav had a tattoo on his left bicep, an anchor with mom written underneath it.

- He would look at himself in the mirror and say ' you're still there you old dog, still there' and he would nod sometimes even wink

- Gustav preferred it if you would speak first, he didn't like initiating things, ' I just feel better that way' is how he'd explain it.

- Gustav would ask for salvation now and again and then say 'have you seen the iron jacket ? have you seen her...'

- After a meal Gustav would pick his teeth with a bone handled tooth pick that he kept in his top pocket along with his salt, this was his ritual

- Ernesto the parrot would sometimes say, 'a picture of the world contains all the known truths - a pitcher of the world, a pitcher of the wood, bah '

- After he disappeared we found out that Gustav had twelve long-sleeved white shirts that required cufflinks, but we didn't find any cufflinks

- Sometimes he would point and say, 'these are objects that I have no name for. I am just waiting keeping the seat warm. Hello '

--Gustav had many ways of making you smile, some straight forward, some layered, he never turned around though, I never saw him turn around anyway.

- Gustav would drop everything and go walking, just like that with his stick and a pack on his back....

- He had a collection of Spanish time pieces,' not that precise but loaded with character, certainly loaded with character

- Sometimes he would blink three  long blinks , blink, blink, blink.

- Gustav used to take a stick on his walks ' he'd do his three blinks and then say ' I met Albert on my walk the other day - he said hello he was with Calais'

- Gustav said sometimes they call me a socialist/pessimist you know, but I prefer to think of myself as a realist

- He would dig around in his garden but appeared to lack focus

- Sometimes he would say, 'people know me, they know me, they know I'm coming, people know me' and then he would sigh...

- He had the strangest way of shaking hands, it was all in the wrist.

- Gustav was fond of red wine, I hardly remember him without a glass of it inn his hands

- He once won a trip to the Caribbean which he was delighted with, he came back as red as a lobster

- Some people say Gustav was an innovator, I'm not sure I understood his field

- Now and again he would have large dinner parties and he would argue with everyone there for hours on end, but still people loved him.

- He was fond of marrons glaces, he used to get them sent over in tins

- Gustav used to talk about the notion of hidden systems and concealed bodies, 'you need to do a forensic audit to find the damn things, but they are there if you look correctly

- He liked to look at things sideways out of the corner of his eye he believed one captured a greater sense of motion from the corners

- Once I opened the door to his study and caught him crying into his hands, just sobbing, he didn't see me and I closed it again.

- Gustav once told me he was rather good at rowing

- Two days before he vanished I remember he said that he pitied anyone who was locked in never ending contemplation of what could have been.

- Some days he would push his nose up at you with his thumb

- One week he sat in the same chair without appearing to get up or move about.

- He used to laugh at people and accuse them of being hopelessly liberal and out of touch with the mechanisms of commerce, 'it takes blood to get things done, politics these days is about trying to spill less of it'

- He had great distain for magazines, which he referred to as idle gossip & amplified desire and yet he had large piles of them all around his house

- 'I'm not suspicious , just careful, because you never know, you never know' and he would tap a little vial he wore around his neck and wink...

- He has regular meetings with a group he oversaw, on alternate Tuesdays, he would get very serious before them
